Metropolitan Police - Working together for a safer London Metropolitan Police - Working together for a safer London

New Constable/Overview

Policing is a unique job with unique demands, particularly in a city as incomparable as London. It’s not easy, but it is rewarding – packed full of new and interesting experiences – and the key to making our capital city the world’s safest.

A modern Police Officer’s role is about more than working to reduce crime. It is now just as much about reducing the fear of crime, working in partnership with communities to make a real difference and improve quality of life for everyone.

As a Police Officer with the MPS, you will operate on the front line, supporting victims and witnesses, providing reassurance and instilling confidence. You will also be in a position to make a proactive contribution to your area, building up relationships and trust.

Your training will provide you with all the tools you need to carry out such tasks, including how to gather and manage information and intelligence effectively, enabling you to make arrests and ensure prosecutions are successful.

Given the importance of the job, it is unsurprising that MPS Police Officers receive extremely competitive salaries. However, these tend to pale in comparison with the sense of satisfaction and achievement that working to strengthen a community brings.

To reach that stage, however, you must go through our rigorous selection procedure, designed to test whether you have the kind of qualities necessary to become a successful Police Officer.

Beyond such requirements, however, a potential Police Officer could be anyone, regardless of their background, culture, faith or sexuality.

Indeed, the MPS is committed to creating a police service that is fully representative of London’s unparalleled diversity. To this end, we actively encourage applications from women and black and minority ethnic communities.

If you are interested in becoming a Police Officer you can apply by attending a recruitment event. Please visit our Events page for details of forthcoming events.
