PCSO

Training

As a position of responsibility, it is essential that you are able to perform the role of PCSO in a professional and competent manner. Your training will ensure that this is the case, enabling you to serve your community with confidence.

Initial training

On appointment as a PCSO, you will undergo six weeks and two days classroom-based training. This will introduce you to the MPS and the role of PCSO, as well as help you to establish skills and knowledge in areas such as:

  • Radio procedure
  • Report writing
  • Dealing with evidence
  • Gathering intelligence
  • Managing a crime scene
  • Entering premises
  • Use of force
  • Communication
  • Human rights
  • Race & diversity
  • Road checks
  • Stop and search
  • Health, safety & welfare
  • Officer safety
  • Emergency life support

Throughout the course you will be tested on what you have learned. The results of these tests will be used in conjunction with your overall performance during the course to identify any areas requiring further development. Full support and guidance is available throughout the course to achieve this. However, failure to meet the required standard may result in termination of employment.

Further training

Once you have completed your initial training you will be posted to an Operational Command Unit in one of London's 32 boroughs. Here you will receive further training, tailored to the requirements of your specific role and borough.

Probation

Your first year as a PCSO will be a probationary period, during which you will be required to demonstrate that you have taken your training and experiences on board and developed the capacity to meet the normal requirements of your post.
