The Different Roles
Special constable
Special constables are volunteer police officers - everyday people who in their spare time do something positive for themselves and their community.
- They have the same powers as regular police officers.
- They volunteer at least 16 hours a month.
- They make a real difference.
- They wear the same uniform as regular officers.
New constable
As a police officer with the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS), you will operate on the front line, supporting victims and witnesses, providing reassurance and instilling confidence.
Presently we are not accepting new applications for police constables.
You may wish to gain valuable police officer experience and skills in the voluntary role of special constable.

Police staff

Police Community Support Officer (PCSO)
PCSOs are key to how we engage London's communities. Building bridges with the public, they are a reassuring presence, deterring crime and making a visible difference to people's lives.

- They help create safer neighbourhoods.
- They earn up to £26k a year.

Met Volunteer Programme
The Met Volunteer Programme (MVP) gives volunteers the opportunity to support the MPS in making London the safest major city in the world.
- Met Volunteers lend their skills and free time.
- They volunteer in the borough that they also live or work in.
- By giving back to their community, they also gain valuable experience.
Access to the MPS courses
The Met Careers Team has teamed up with five London-based colleges together with one college in Essex to provide this course for people who are interested in the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) but who are concerned that they might not have some of the basic skills required.
