New Specials help keep Shoreditch safe
Two new Special Constables, one on his first-ever shift, arrested two males for grievous bodily harm while on foot patrol in Hackney Borough.
SC Mahhad Mahhmed, who had completed his training days before, was on the beat with SC Fraser Woodward in Shoreditch when two colleagues called them for help.
When they arrived on the scene, they found that SCs Scott McIlwaine – a London Ambulance Service paramedic by day – and SC Josh Gerrish, who had been a Special for one month, had witnessed a fight outside a nightclub during which a member of the public had his arm broken in two places.
While SC McIlwaine treated the injured male, SC Gerrish and SC Mahhmed arrested two men in connection with the incident.
SC Mahhmed said:“It was great being able to put into practice the things I had learnt so soon after my training. I’m really looking forward to going out on duty again and help to keep the borough safe.”
SC Gerrish said:“This was my first arrest and I really liked the way we all worked as a team. I was pleased that we were able to get a result after the man had been attacked.”
PS Kevin Weeden, Metropolitan Special Constabulary (MSC) Manager at Hackney Borough, said:“I am very pleased with our officers’ achievements. Not only did SCs Mahhmed and Gerrish make their first arrests, but SC McIlwaine was also able to use skills learnt outside the MPS to help a member of the public who was obviously in great pain.”
