Metropolitan Police - Met Volunteer

Met Volunteer

Who we're looking for

In short, we are looking for people with the time to give and the enthusiasm to make a difference. You don't necessarily need to have any particular skills - although specialists are always welcome - just the right attitude and community values. We believe that everybody has important skills to offer, and we will be happy to discuss how you might put these to use within the Met Volunteer Programme.

You don't have to be retired as the hours can usually be flexible to suit you. You could be fresh out of school and looking for ideas; a student or new graduate and looking for some experience; in full-time or part-time employment and looking for some variety; out of work and looking to brush up on your work skills; and so on.

You could come to us during a career break, in the evening, at the weekend or early in the morning. Because policing is a 24-hour challenge, there are volunteering opportunities to match a wide range of circumstances.

As a volunteer you might on average contribute four hours a week, and certainly not more than forty hours a month, at a time to suit you. You are not paid financially, however you will receive reimbursement for any reasonable 'out of pocket' travel expenses to and from your place of volunteering.

Volunteer criteria

The Met Volunteer Programme welcomes volunteers from all backgrounds and with a range of experiences. However there are certain key criteria that have to be met before we can consider you for a volunteering role:

  • Are you over 18?
  • Have you been a permanent resident in the UK for the past three continuous years?
  • Do you currently live or work in one of the Metropolitan boroughs?

If you answered 'Yes' to all of the above then you meet the basic criteria for becoming a Met Volunteer and can apply now. Although please note, any application you make will still be subject to acceptance by a B/OCU MVP Manager and you meeting the necessary security vetting criteria.

On the other hand, if you answered 'No' to any of the above then we're unfortunately unable to consider you for a volunteer role at present. If you are aged 14-18, then have a think about the police cadets. Alternatively, there's a range of other volunteering opportunities outside of the MPS that you might be interested in.
